Description

Michter's Pot Still Original Sour Mash. A rare late 1980s example of whiskey distilled at the original Michter's distillery in Schaeferstown, PA. Generally overlooked in its time, the distillery developed a cult status in the years following its closure in 1989 after Julian Van Winkle III bottled the Hirsch Reserve for Gordon Hue using barrels he had purchased from it.

Nose
Inviting aromas of caramel, vanilla, and dried fruit, with hints of smokiness and spice. Aged oak, dark caramel, dried apricots, stewed plums, star anise, dried ginger, earthy vanilla bean, and faint sweet pipe tobacco smokiness. Butterscotch with ripe pears and apples, white pepper spice and oak.
Palate
Smooth and rich, with complex flavors of caramel, vanilla, dried fruit, and a touch of spice. Toasted brown sugar, deep molasses, burnt toffee, baking spices (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg), candied orange peel, dried figs, subtle cherry cordial, nutty character (pecans, walnuts), and elegant wood influence. Butterscotch, vanilla, caramel, toffee, coffee cake, cherry, raspberry, and cinnamon bun.
Finish
Long and warm, with a lingering smokiness and refined smoothness. Oak presence lingers, evolving into sweet, lingering caramel and dark chocolate. Gentle, peppery spice persists, interwoven with fading notes of dried fruit and a pleasant, old-fashioned menthol coolness. Medium long with oak and pepper spice.
