- Nose
- The Midleton Very Rare 1993 opens with an elegant, rich nose featuring vanilla, honey, and dried fruit notes, subtle hints of spices like nutmeg and cloves, and a delicate, underlying oakiness. It also presents crisp aromas of fresh apples, ripe conference pears, lemongrass, acacia honey, linseed, custard powder, vanilla, flowery notes, and a subtle whiff of soap. Rich nutty character and fudge are at the core, supported by apple crumble and unusual notes of chilli and brown banana.
- Palate
- On the palate, the whiskey is exceptionally smooth, with creamy and rich flavours of toffee, caramel, and dark fruit. There's a touch of spice – a gentle peppery warmth – along with hints of chocolate and butter. The balance between sweetness and spice is remarkable, creating a well-rounded, indulgent mouthfeel. Toffee and treacle take center stage, complemented by butterscotch, gingerbread infused with cinnamon, caramelized oranges and tangerines, and amaretto macaroons.
- Finish
- The finish is long and warming, with lingering flavours of oak, honey, and a faint spiciness, leaving behind a refined, smooth aftertaste. White pepper and a subtle touch of nutmeg provide a gentle spice, and the finale is punctuated by a refreshing burst of mint. An elegant finish as the old grain whiskey takes this to the end.
