Description

Produced by the Nikka Whisky Distilling Company, this limited edition Japanese single malt whisky was distilled at the Miyagikyo distillery. The Grande series was created to represent the unique character of Nikka's individual distilleries, with this Miyagiko edition showcasing the distillery's typical rich mouthfeel, which is followed by a bittersweet aftertaste. Bottled at 48% and without chill-filtration, it was launched in mid-2022 as part of Nikka's Japanese Travel Retail Discovery Series and features a higher proportion of sherry cask-aged malt.

Nose
Soft and floral with ripe pear, apple and a hint of peach. Vanilla, honey and light citrus zest follow, supported by subtle oak and a touch of almond. Young, zesty and vibrant with a much bigger sherry influence, sugary sweet cream, and some light raisin and grape notes.
Palate
Rounded and creamy with vanilla, caramel and malty sweetness. Orchard fruit remains clear, joined by gentle spice like white pepper and cinnamon. Towards the end, soft oak and a hint of cocoa appear. Baked pastry, almond, black pepper, and a burst of citrus zest. Bready quality reminiscent of apple pie and sweet bread. Milk chocolate and buttery shortbread. Excellent mouthfeel, creamy and rich. Malty, salty, and sweet, with more almond than vanilla action. A bit of Meyer lemon zips through the middle, and a light woodiness stays in the background.
Finish
Medium length and elegant with lingering fruit, vanilla and soft spice. It closes clean, slightly dry, and refined. Medium length finish that clings to the mouth. More pastry dough and honey mixed with a gentle woodiness. Short finish offers tarter citrus, more vanilla, and louder oak spice.
