Description

Mortlach Special Strength is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Speyside region, known as 'The Beast of Dufftown' due to its rich and powerful flavors derived from a unique 2.81 distillation process. This expression was part of Diageo's 2014 relaunch of Mortlach's core range and was released exclusively for the Travel Retail market. Bottled at 49% ABV, it combines malts aged in a complex mix of first-fill, refill, and re-charred American and European oak casks, including Sherry and Bourbon barrels, to bring out intense fruit, spice, and herbaceous elements.

Nose
Full and rich with notes of oranges, orange marmalade, apricots, vanilla pod, chewy raisin, and a hint of meatiness. Some sources also mention Speyside heather, grains, grapefruit peel, red pepper, pickles, and smoked salt.
Palate
Rich and full-bodied, sweet and fruity with oranges, caramel, almonds, marzipan, and a slightly fizzy mouth-feel. Also features barley, caramel sauce, orange oil, dried herbs, sesame oil, candied fruits, lemon, pepper, bitter chocolate, and a creamy, smooth texture with vanilla, honey, and spices. Intense malt, apple, rich dried fruits, orange rind, tobacco leaf, fresh apricots, Sherried oak, and a hint of chocolaty smoke are also noted.
Finish
Long and oily, with a lingering sweetness and a slight bitterness of oranges. Features light floral elements, a touch of pepper, nutty flavors, a silky texture with notes of wood, a little wisp of smoke, apricot sweetness, and lingering spice.
