The Nikka whisky company was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, with the creation of his Yoichi distillery on the island of Hokkaido. Surprisingly smoky with ashy peat, dark damp soil, orange, lemon, vanilla, tire rubber, pastry dough, and syrupy notes. Hints of honey, pear, apricot, grapefruit, roasted oak, clove, and white flowers. [1, 8, 14, 18]
Palate
Huge, hot, and spicy arrival with chocolate, peat, earthy notes, pears in syrup, and licorice. Rich, oily texture with sweet, spicy, fruity, and char notes. Campfire smoke, moss, seawater, vanilla, grain, green pepper, zest, salt, raisins, cantaloupe, and fruit. [1, 8, 14, 18]
Finish
Long and positive, with coastal notes, herbal tones of pine and mint, raisins, prunes, chocolate, and vanilla cream. Lingering honey, smoke, dried apricot, oak, and grapefruit. Medium length with pleasing woody spice. [1, 5, 14, 18]
