Description

This ongoing series from Bruichladdich is the most heavily peated whisky in the world. Named after James Brown's farm that is situated above Port Charlotte, this Brobdingnagian whisky deftly lives up to its description as, "The iron fist in the velvet glove". Octomore 09.3 is a 5 year old intensely peated single malt from Bruichladdich, produced using 100% Islay grown Concerto barley from Irene's Field at Octomore Farm, distilled in 2012. It was matured entirely on Islay in a combination of ex-American whiskey and French wine casks (25% first-fill American oak, 25% third-fill virgin oak, 20% second-fill Rivesaltes, 20% second-fill Syrah and 10% second-fill bourbon casks). It is non-chill filtered and uncolored.

Nose
Toasted oak and burnt herbs, with a whiff of fresh grass mixed in. Some lighter hints of fresh vanilla, but smoke is the main draw here.
Palate
Black tea smokiness and general peat reek once again, with just a hint of coastal air. Honey and golden syrup.
Finish
Petrichor, salted butter and bonfire embers.
