Description

This Old Perth 1994 23 Year Old is a limited batch release blended malt whisky from Morrison & Mackay. It is part of the Old Perth series, a revived brand paying homage to the historic link between blended whisky and the Scottish city of Perth. This sherry-matured blended malt originates from the old Highland Distillers company, combining malts from distilleries such as Macallan, Highland Park, Glenrothes, Glenturret, Tamdhu, and Bunnahabhain, with Macallan reportedly being a significant portion. Bottled at 44.9% ABV, without chill filtration or artificial coloring, this whisky is described as intense and satisfying. Only 515 bottles were produced.

The rich sherry character gives this 23-year-old blended malt a warm, fruit-led feel, with cherries, apple jam and dried plums alongside brown sugar. I like the contrast from the wisps of peat smoke and the drying finish, where spice, oak and coffee come through. It sounds layered without losing its easy-to-follow thread: sweet fruit up front, then a more savoury, gently smoky close.

The brown sugar and fruitcake bring clear sweetness, while old oak, spice and the drying finish keep it from feeling one-sided. That balance makes this a warmly appealing direction for a sherry-led blended malt.

The cinnamon and clove give the sherry sweetness a welcome lift. Brown sugar and rich cherries keep it warm and rounded, with a little smoke in the background.
