Description

The Pulteney distillery, founded in 1826 in Wick, is known for producing the Old Pulteney brand of single malt. Production ceased in 1930 due to prohibition and resumed in 1947. This 1989 Vintage is a 26-year-old expression, matured in hand-selected American oak ex-bourbon barrels that previously held heavily peated whisky. It is a limited edition release, natural in color and non-chill filtered.

Nose
Spices of the Orient, tangy green apples, warm wood smoke, honey, vanilla, and lemon/lime citrus notes. Hints of brine, sea breezes, and a light peat influence with smoked mackerel and iodine. Further notes include barley, toasted vanilla oak, and a touch of floral and vegetal elements.
Palate
Starts with earthy and delicate peat, accompanied by a heavy, spicy underpinning. Notes of vanilla custard, runny toffee, and bitter orange marmalade emerge, alongside citrus (lemon/lime), salt, and caramel. The mouthfeel is oily and silky, with hints of hay, malts, and woody spice.
Finish
Long and satisfying, with lingering peat smoke, spicy wood, and a salty, coastal tang. Notes of oak, dark chocolate, orange peel, and lemon zest are present, with an earthy and slightly tannic character.
