Description

The first ever independent bottling company to be established in Malaysia, Eiling Lim began trading on 1st January 2014. It is named after its founder and its casks are selected with the assistance of her husband, the renowned Glenfarclas-aficionado and former Thosop-owner, Luc Timmermans.

Nose: Apricots, heather, dry straw, a little pepper, pleasant whiff of smoke (burning heather and roses), honey, pickled ginger, caramelised orange rind, lemon peel, tinned tangerines, golden syrup, oak wood shavings, caramel, oatmeal cookies, orange sauce, maltiness.
Palate: Sweet with stone fruits, malty honey, leathery note, pepper, tinned tangerines, pickled ginger, orange peel, a touch of bitterness and dryness, stroopwaffel, orange sherbet, honeycomb cereal, lemon curd, scones.
Finish: Leather, pepper, medium-long, dry, citrus, orange peel, herbal notes, wood shavings, a touch of bitterness and smoke, creamy, orange, lemon, scones, tangy, drying oak, peat.

The oak seems present but not in charge: wood shavings appear on the nose, while drying oak and a little bitterness show up on the finish. That feels like a reasonable fit with the brighter fruit, honey and citrus running through the notes, rather than an oak-led whisky. The light smoke and pepper add contrast without taking over. I’d be slightly wary of the dry, bitter edge, but the mix of orange, stone fruit and gentle oak sounds appealing to me.
