Description

This heavily peated whisky from Bruichladdich is generally peated to 40ppm and is distilled in the same tall stills resulting in a spirit that has both power and elegance. Created to commemorate the Lochindaal distillery, originally called Port Charlotte, which closed in 1929, it was the first spirit distilled by the Murray McDavid team in 2001. This OLC:01 2010 vintage is the second release in Port Charlotte's Cask Exploration Series. It was initially matured in ex-bourbon, ex-Syrah, and ex-VDN (vin doux naturel) casks, followed by an 18-month finish in Oloroso sherry hogsheads from Bodega Fernando de Castilla.

Nose
Initially lovely earthy peat smoke and dark fruit, fig predominantly and toffee. Soft peach and honey appear, with a nutty nougat note, baked orange, and a hint of mulled wine spice. Resinous woody aromas, roasted coffee, syrup, citrus, chocolate, and crushed sea shells.
Palate
Soft oily texture with a subtle dryness. Leading notes from Oloroso cask and peat smoke, with fruity sweetness of figs, orange, and peach, and a nutty nougat note. Darker notes of tobacco, boot polish, and earthy smoke give a pepperiness.
Finish
Dry earthy peat smoke with lime and figs. Chocolate and vanilla note, salty, sandy character, and peat embers giving a last hint of smoke.
