Description

This heavily peated whisky from Bruichladdich is generally peated to 40ppm and is distilled in the same tall stills resulting in a spirit that has both power and elegance. Created to commemorate the Lochindaal distillery, originally called Port Charlotte, which closed in 1929, it was the first spirit distilled by the Murray McDavid team in 2001. Nose
Plenty of yellow plums, fresh flowers, slightly underripe pineapple, orange sherbet, white wine and vanilla. Lots of salty dried meats, prosciutto and melon. Some (Spanish) chorizo, butter and cheesecake. Coastal with brine pools, distant beach bonfire, and maple-glazed grilled salmon. Aromatic wood notes, new leather, white chocolate and nougat.
Palate
Medium body. Very intense. Musty up front, with lots of barnyard, mushroom, and black pepper, then steadily getting tarter. Leather arrives, then orange marmalade and honey. Tarter, juicier fruit: dried apricots, lemon juice, pineapple, bitter orange, and cantaloupe. Loads of mushrooms and burning dried leaves. Getting sweeter as the pineapple comes forward, then finally nutty and vegetal. Loads of earth, mushrooms, some grapefruit pith, and a hint of coffee.
Finish
Extremely nutty and dry. Earthy, dunnage warehouse notes and cedar, with more smoked fish and some green olives. Plums, bananas, pineapple, honey and fresh jalapenos.
