Description

Having been in specialist and craft Scotch Whisky production for generations, Douglas Laing originally exported blends, but now carries the family name down the line by focusing on bottling exceptional single malts and grains as part of their Old Particular, Provenance and XOP ranges. This particular release is a single grain Scotch whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas Distillery, located in Glasgow's Lowland region. Distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2022 as a 21-year-old, it was matured in a refill hogshead and is part of Douglas Laing's Xtra Old Particular (XOP) 'Seasonal Curiosities' series, with only 293 bottles released.

Nose
A little ethanol/varnish on the front end, creamy, ripe apples & apricots, hard caramel candy, a fair amount of oak shavings. With a bit of water, more cooked apple, with a touch of powdered ginger and clove. The oak really takes over after a while, it's a fairly light profile overall.
Palate
Nippy, grain forward, cereals, a little peach oatmeal (the instant kind), apple, a little brown sugar and then the tannins start to grip everything. Water helps reduce the ethanol hit but gives much of the same.
Finish
Bitter and oaky, there is a lingering flavour that is almost juniper-y/acrid to end, not the most graceful exit.
