Nose
Initially drying with slightly dusty, oaky notes; then masses of sherry. Homemade rum and raisin ice cream - dense with vanilla and tropical spice. Pine resin and wraith-like phenols. Dry and distinctive with notes of sawdust, vanilla, dates, prunes, big sherry, toffee sweetness, and hints of dark peat and dry floral aromas.
Palate
Hot, thin and drying at cask strength. Herbal. Clove with hints of eucalyptus. Liquorice bitterness and linseed oil obscure a base note of rich fruit-cake; and a fugitive note of red berry tartness. Gentle and medium bodied with savoury, bittersweet herbal flavours before a rush of winter berries, marmalade, butterscotch and malt.
Finish
Warming and mentholic with a toasted cereal graininess. Clove and aniseed moderated with some molasses sweetness and a delicate, late cocoa dryness. Richer dried fruit character emerges against a dustier, nuttier background. Herbal, crisp and tangy with exotic Eastern spices, fruity, chocolaty, walnut, and oak.
