Description
Scapa was founded in 1885 and used to be known as the only truly 'unpeated' Island malt. It was damaged by fire in 1919, but rebuilt. In 1959 a Lomond still was installed which ran as intended until 1979. Production ceased in 1994 with occasional runs being done by the crew from nearby Highland Park. In 2004, however it was released as single malt and a major refurbishment of the distillery began. This is a very rare 1980 vintage from Scapa, bottled at 25 years old at an impressive 54% ABV. It is presented in a nice wooden case with a metal plate to the front. This bottling appeared in 2005 during a turbulent time for the tiny Orcadian distillery, which was midway through a major refurbishment project and in the process of being sold to Chivas Brothers. It was bottled at cask strength and is considered a one-off release, remaining the oldest official bottling of Scapa until 2020.
