Description

A revered single malt distillery in Campbeltown that has operated since 1828. It is today owned by J&A Mitchell & Co who produce three single malt styles there. These are its flagship two-and-half times distilled Springbank, a heavily-peated malt known as Longrow, and the triple-distilled Hazelburn. This particular release, part of the 'Wood Expressions' series, is a 12-year-old cask strength Springbank distilled in May 1997 and bottled in February 2010. It was matured for nine years in refill ex-bourbon casks and then finished for three years in first-fill Claret (Bordeaux) red wine casks. It is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, with an outturn of 9,360 bottles.

Nose
Sweet, musty & grape-y with notes of red apple skins, nutmeg, cinnamon, and sweet spearmint. Hints of oily wood polish, dark grapes, and muddy peat. Underlying notes of stone fruit, old leather, roses, caramel, and fresh walnut bread.
Palate
Musty red grapes, hot ash, and the characteristic Springbank "funk." Notes of muddy peat, chilli salt, apple skins, wood spices, and stone fruit. Hints of chocolate mousse, currant, black pepper, nutmeg, graham cracker, light smoke, steak, and vanilla.
Finish
Long with wood spice, chilli salt, and leather. Lingering stone fruit and grapes. Caramel, red grapes, nougat, ginger, and vanilla wafers. Sour, bitter, and astringent with tart apple pie notes. Slightly peppery with a salty edge.
