Nose
Definitely sherried, but unlike most modern sherried malts. It does not have as many spices, but is all on polished wood and a lot of deep dark fruit notes. Remarkably deep nose, a lot of complex layers that I was unable to pick out back then. There is also a lot of honey swirling around the fruit, both are very beautifully balanced.
Palate
A fruit and honey bomb if there ever was one! This honey/beehive notes go very well together with the sherried fruit notes (dates/figs, plums), making it very powerful. Few traces of oak even after 33 years, but you notice on many levels how good and well-integrated it has gotten over the years.
Finish
Only here does the time in the cask start to tell, as it is a bit tannic/oaky. However, it is also overwhelming with its profile of soft fruits and honeys. There is also an undertone of coffee, which makes this finish a very powerful one compared to the rather bright and fruity feel on the palate. After a while, you start to notice just how many different fruits are there. I can get peaches, melon, papaya, maybe some oranges. This finish continues for ages.
