A historic Japanese whisky company, originally founded as Torii Shoten in 1899. It was renamed Kotobukiya in 1921, and again to Suntory after its flagship whisky brand in 1963. It has since become one of the world's largest spirits multinationals and was renamed Suntory Holdings Ltd in 2009. This special limited edition Suntory Old Whisky was released to celebrate the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Pig, presented in a collectible decanter.

Vanilla, caramel and toffee give this a clearly sweet, rounded character, while the soft oak keeps it measured. It sounds gentle rather than especially fresh or bright, so it may suit someone looking for an easygoing style more than a crisp one.
The balance is what appeals to me about this Japanese blended whisky. Vanilla and caramel on the nose lead into toffee and honey on the palate, while gentle oak on the nose and soft oak on the palate give the sweetness some structure. I am glad to see light malt in the mix, even if it is not the main feature. Dried fruits and spice are subtle nose accents rather than the focus. The clean, warming, lingering finish fits the whisky's smooth, measured character. I find that combination appealing, though someone who wants malt to take a stronger role may be less taken with its light touch.
