Turntable Spirits is a blending house founded by brothers Gordon and Ally Stevenson, aiming to create new generation blended Scotch whisky with transparency and creativity. This 'Track #2 - Firestarter' is part of their 2023 Collection, a limited edition release. It is a peated blend, crafted from 40% Caol Ila Virgin Oak Barrel, 23% Cameronbridge Virgin Oak Barrel, 22% Benrinnes Chinkapin Barrel, and 15% Invergordon Virgin Oak Barrel.

Nose: A hit of proper campfire smoke with a whiff of dried seaweed, a soft mineral edge, and gentle porridge notes. Also touches of caramel-glazed apple, sandalwood, and apricots, with a coastal breeze and hints of cinnamon.
Palate: Oily mouthfeel, very Caol Ila forward with smoked husks, smouldering embers, ashes, and a lovely salinity. Notes of vanilla, conifer, spiced Mexican chocolate, and warming wood.
Finish: Medium to long, with a pinch of salt, sweet ashes, somewhat green peat, and hemp rope.

The appeal here is the contrast: campfire smoke and seaweed meet caramel-glazed apple and apricots, while cinnamon adds a gentle spice note rather than taking over. On the palate, vanilla and spiced Mexican chocolate give the smoky, salty character some sweetness and warmth. That balance makes this an interesting fit for my preference for spice alongside sweeter notes. The finish keeps its focus on salt, sweet ashes, and green peat, so it sounds more coastal and smoky than dessert-led.
