Description

Wolfburn Black Saturday is a limited edition single malt Scotch whisky released in 2024. It commemorates the 'Black Saturday' tragedy of 19 August 1848, a historical event where a storm claimed the lives of 94 fishermen off the coast of Wick. This bottling features artwork by Robert Anderson depicting the event and was released in association with the Seafarers Memorial Group to raise funds. It is a non-age statement, lightly peated whisky from the Wolfburn Distillery, which was revived in 2013.

Nose
Initially smoky with hints of fruit and fresh sea air, accompanied by vanilla and oak wood-shavings. Whispers of mellow peat, slight vegetal notes such as fennel, moss and charred tree bark, spiced with crushed peppercorns and cured meats, along with vanilla, caramel and kumquats.
Palate
Floral notes, raisins and light spices. Malty flavours with soft honey sweetness. Mellow notes of caramelised apples, stewed pears and salted butter playing off intense notes of charred steak, smoldering driftwood, and smoked seaweed.
Finish
Soft peaty tones ensuring a smooth and lingering finish. Medium length, with more intense flavours slowly fading, leaving ashes, charred bacon strips, and a slight tannic presence.
