Description

Yamazaki 55 Year Old is the oldest single malt whisky in the history of the House of Suntory and Japanese whisky, representing the pinnacle of Japanese whisky craftsmanship. Bottled in 2020, this extremely limited edition release pays tribute to the Japanese "Showa" era of the 1960s. It is a blend of precious single malts, featuring components distilled in 1960 under the supervision of Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii and aged in Mizunara casks, and whiskies distilled in 1964 under Suntory's Second Master Blender Keizo Saji and aged in American White Oak casks. The final blend was crafted by fifth-generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo and third-generation Master Blender Shingo Torii. Only 200 bottles were released globally, with an initial 100 for Japan in 2020 and another 100 for international markets in 2021. Each bottle is presented in a bespoke black Mizunara wood box with Suruga lacquer, featuring a crystal bottle with engraved calligraphy, handmade Echizen washi paper, and a Kyo-kumihimo plaited cord.

Nose
Softly oaky with sandalwood, tatami mats, saddle soap, antiques shops, fresh paper, persimmon, peach brandy, orange oil, and old Palo Cortado sherry. Fragrant sandalwood mingled with well-ripened fruit.
Palate
Herbal initially, with incense, hemp oil, sage, sarsaparilla, Assam tea, willow bark, bracken. Creamy notes of mango lassi and coconut ice cream, subdued fruitiness (clementine juice, Yamazaki pineapple). Polished brass, leather-bound books, oil lamps, soot, and a hint of peat. Sweetness layered with subtle bitterness, woody note from Mizunara cask. Honeyed sweetness, stewed raisins, fig, leather, dark chocolate.
Finish
Extremely long and pleasantly bitter with black tea, Branca Menta, gentian root, dandelion greens, and a little wisp of smoke. Fragrance like scented wood and a hint of smokiness. Sweet, rich, lingering. Monumental, velvet-like layers of spice, wood, and sweet cedar.
