The flagship malt whisky distilling of the Nikka Distilling Co, established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru. Despite limited availability due to stock shortages in the 21st century, its single malt is highly regarded and it also provides important fillings for Nikka blends such as Taketsuru.

sundial.postcard21 AugThere’s a nice contrast between delicate peat and red berries on the nose, then creamy spice, orange and earthy peat smoke on the palate. The long, sweet, smoky finish with fresh apples sounds appealing; it’s a layered, characterful style.
A fine Japanese single malt.
The dried fruit and dark chocolate have the richness I look for in a sherry-cask whisky, while earthy peat smoke and savoury notes keep it from seeming simply sweet. The creamy texture appeals to me; the dry oak on the long finish gives it a firmer edge.
