Ardbeg Old & Rare Platinum Selection 19 Year Old, Hogshead Cask, 1991, Douglas Laing, 52.1%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

86 / 100

There’s a compelling contrast here: restrained smokiness sits alongside wax, oil-lamp character and smoked beef jerky, rather than dominating the nose. The palate’s light-yet-mouth-coating quality is an especially interesting turn, with meaty notes meeting mint chocolate. The finish shifts toward rosemary funk, ash, pine and citrus. Mustiness is part of the described character, so this won’t read as a tidy, straightforward smoke-led malt; that unusual mix is what makes the notes appealing to me.

Nose
Waxy, oil lamp, day-old rained-out campfire, restrained smokiness, smoked beef jerky, leather furniture, musty.
Palate
Meaty, mint chocolate; somehow simultaneously light, but full and mouth-coating.
Finish
Velvety lamb and rosemary funk, ash, woodsy pine, some citrus.
