The ripe fruit and spicy wood on the nose make a pleasing contrast with the chocolate and toasted oak on the palate. That turn toward oak particularly suits my taste: it gives the fruit-led opening a different direction without making the whisky sound one-dimensional. The wood also provides a connection between the nose and palate, even as the other notes change. A long-lasting finish rounds out a character that seems to have room to develop. For someone who enjoys oak in a single malt, this has plenty of appeal, though it is the balance between the fruit and the darker palate notes that makes it interesting.
