The appeal here lies in the contrast between a bright nose and a palate that puts oak first. Caramelised fruit, hazelnuts and grapefruit rind give the opening some lift, while dark red berries and creamy vanilla take the fuller palate in a richer direction. Ginger, sweet spice and aniseed add detail, though the oak-forward character makes me cautious about expecting the fruit to lead throughout. With a single malt, that balance interests me more than the cask combination by itself. The finish returns to sweetness, hazelnut and ripe figs, continuing the richer side of the whisky. There is enough contrast to hold my interest, even if the oak may be the deciding factor for anyone who prefers a lighter touch.
