Balvenie Tun 1509, American Oak & European Oak Sherry Cask, Batch No. 2, 2015, 50.3%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

88 / 100

The contrast between the fruitier, sweeter nose and the drier, more sherried palate gives this whisky some welcome movement. Strawberries, biscuits and dried fruits lead into caramel and honey, while the slight bitter or burnt edge keeps the sweetness from feeling too simple. The finish carries that shift into darker maple syrup, with stewed pear and lingering spice. A richly layered character, with the fruit and spice doing more than simply adding sweetness.
