Benrinnes The Ultimate 12 Year Old, Oloroso Sherry Cask, Cask #5, 2011, The Ultimate Whisky Company, 57.3%

86 / 100

Cherry and blackberry with chocolate ganache sounds like a good balance of fruit and darker notes. On the palate, red fruits meet roasted nuts, dark fudge and subtle spices; that shift toward richer flavours is the part I find appealing. The bottle is labelled unpeated, but that alone doesn’t settle how much smoke comes through in the flavour. Since the notes don’t describe smoke, I wouldn’t call it smoke-free. It sounds more focused on fruit and richness than on smoke.
