There’s a pleasing meeting of sweetness and spice here: caramel and big sherry sit alongside pepper, while the finish brings together toffee, spice and cinnamon. The nose adds oranges, raisins and seasoned wood, giving the sherried character a bright, earthy edge. That contrast is what draws me to these notes; the spice has company rather than taking over. A warm, substantial-sounding Highland single malt, with enough variety across nose, palate and finish to keep the character from feeling one-note.
