This has an appealing balance for someone who likes peat to have company rather than take the whole stage. Crisp green apple, violets and fresh pineapple juice make for a lively opening, with sage and baked fruits adding a quieter, richer side. On the palate, earthy peat meets sweet vanilla pods and blackcurrants; the sea salt is a particularly welcome contrast for my tastes. The finish returns to earthy, rich peat alongside a long, honeyed sweetness. That gives the smoke a satisfying place in the whisky without making it the only point of interest. I’d lean toward the peat and salt here, though the sweetness running through the palate and finish might be more than a drier-style peat fan wants.
