Caol Ila The Whisky Trail 12 Year Old, Sherry Cask, 1999, Speciality Drinks Ltd, 43%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

78 / 100

This sounds more smoky and bracing than richly rounded, though the honey at the start of the palate gives it a welcome sweet counterpoint. Strawberry syrup on the nose adds another small lift, while salt, tar and metallic notes pull it toward a tougher, more savoury character. I’m usually drawn to richness, so that contrast is appealing, even if the description points to a fairly lean, peaty direction overall.
