Sweet ripe fig and orange marmalade give the nose a generous start, while fresh gooseberry and pear bring a brighter side to the fruit. On the palate, cinnamon and crushed black pepper sit over an earthy base; raisins, vanilla and a hint of dry oak make for a combination I tend to like. The silky, almost oily texture sounds appealing, though the caramelised fruit and spice may feel quite rich for someone after a quieter style. The finish is where the sweetness gets a useful counterweight: dry, slightly drying spicy oak and lingering spiciness, with marmalade taking on a bitter edge. I like that contrast more than the sweetness alone. It gives the richer notes some shape without making the oak the whole story.
