Glenfiddich Rare Collection 40 Year Old, Oak Cask, 2007, 43.5%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

89 / 100

The dried-fruit and Christmas-cake sweetness has plenty of company here: bitter chocolate and dryish oak bring a welcome counterpoint, while roasted coffee and faint smoke add depth. That balance keeps the sweeter notes from taking over, which is appealing for a whisky built around rich fruit. The palate sounds silky and full, though the long, complex finish may make this a more layered style than a straightforward sweet dram. A strong fit for someone who likes sweetness with darker, drier edges.
