Highland Park 29 Year Old, Bourbon Hogshead Cask, 1989, Cadenhead's, 40.6%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

88 / 100

The appeal here is the balance between tropical fruit and restrained smoke. Pineapple and sweet fruit give it a bright centre, while the light peat smoke keeps the character from becoming too soft. The finish sounds especially appealing: smoke lingers alongside lemon zest and exotic fruit, rather than taking over. It reads as a measured, fruit-led Highland Park, and that restraint is what makes the combination interesting to me.
