This blend makes its case through contrast rather than volume. Rich stewed and dried fruit meet malty toffee sweetness on the nose, while the palate brings more dried fruit and toffee alongside soft woody sweetness. The oak cask detail is useful, though it needn’t be put in charge of every flavour. What interests me more is the shift from an intense, layered palate to a finish described as long and restrained, with just wisps of smoke. I tend to favour dried fruit and gentle wood character, so that balance suits my taste. The smoke gets a modest role at the end; it doesn’t have to deliver a speech.
