The dark fruit and spice are what draw me to this whisky’s character. Rich sherry and dark fruits on the nose sit alongside citrus peel, giving that opening more contrast than fruit alone would offer. On the palate, blackcurrant and plum meet dark chocolate, roasted coffee and oak spice. That combination sounds bold, but it also gives the fruit something firm to play against. Oak spice is particularly welcome to my taste, and the finish carries the fruit-and-spice thread through with lingering fruits and cardamom. There’s a hint of smoke at the end, though it reads as an accent rather than the point of the whisky. Overall, this looks like an assertive expression with enough contrast to keep its richness interesting.
