Kilchoman Machir Bay Cask Strength Edition, Bourbon & Sherry Cask, 2025, 58.1%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

87 / 100

This is a bold, smoky single malt, but the sweetness gives it a welcoming side. Vanilla and caramel sit alongside citrus on the nose, while creamy malt sweetness balances maritime peat smoke on the palate. That balance appeals to me: the smoke has plenty of room, yet it is not the whole story. The full-bodied, warming palate and 58.1% ABV make this a more assertive choice than a gentle everyday malt. On the finish, smoke gradually gives way to vanilla, toasted coconut and a soft saline note. For someone who likes sweetness alongside peat, there is a lot to enjoy here; for someone seeking a softer style, the bold smoke may be the sticking point.
