Laphroaig From the Sweet Side to the Seaside 6 Year Old, Ex-Bourbon Cask, Cask #29.251, 2011, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, 62.7%

88 / 100

There’s a lively contrast here: white chocolate, vanilla ice cream and squidgy fudge meet streaky bacon and peat smoke on the nose. The palate turns toward burnt waffles, applewood smoke and tarry maritime character, giving the sweetness a distinctly coastal counterpoint. I like that the notes suggest both a sweet side and a smoky, dry finish without making either one the whole story. The ex-bourbon cask is part of the character named here, while the sensory details keep the focus on malt, smoke and that maritime edge.
