Macallan SMWS 24.160 Madeira Cake In A Humidor 12 Year Old, Sherry Cask, Cask #24.160, 2008, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, 63.5%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

86 / 100

This has a rich, sherry-led character, with plums and prunes on the nose followed by dried fruits, raisins and figs on the palate. Demerara sugar and oranges add variety to the opening, while root beer, leather and medicinal notes make the palate more than a straightforward fruit-and-vanilla combination. The hint of sulphur on the nose and the medicinal notes may divide opinion, so the richness is not without its reservations. The finish is described as medium-long and somewhat dry, with old leather, dried fruits and clove alongside mulled wine and a warm afterglow. Clove suits a preference for spice, and the stated length gives the closing notes room to register.
