Coffee, chocolate and nuts give this whisky a hearty centre, while pear and sweet licorice bring a softer counterpoint. The notes describe only hints of lightly smoky peat: enough to register, not enough to take over the conversation. That restrained touch suits my interest in smoke without making it the whole plot. The fairly long finish keeps the coffee and spice going, then closes on a notably persistent tannic edge. A characterful, warmly rounded combination, with the finish adding a useful bit of structure.
