McClelland's Clanroy De Luxe, 43%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

79 / 100

The restrained grain and wood character is the main appeal here. Soft nuttiness, aged wood and light grain on the nose lead into a palate where cereal malt and soft wood sit alongside a gentle smoky whiff. Those notes make for a coherent combination rather than a dramatic contrast. The palate is described as light and simple, so someone seeking more prominent spice or smoke may find it a little quiet. I like that the grain remains present through the finish, while the dry echo of malt and wood gives the fade some definition. This is a blended whisky whose understated character suits my preference for grain and malt, though its gentle palate leaves limited room for complexity.
