Mortlach Celtic Label 15 Year Old, Sherry Cask, 1969, Gordon & MacPhail, 56.3%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

88 / 100

The small whiffs of sherry rancio sit alongside a much broader mix of tropical fruit, honey, waxiness and resinous notes. That sounds intriguing, though the character described here doesn’t come across as clearly oak-led; the cask influence feels like one part of a more varied picture. The oily palate and the shift toward molasses and pine give the notes a satisfying sense of development. I’d have liked more direct evidence of oak to judge that side of the whisky, but the contrast itself is appealing.
