Mortlach Distillery Labels 15 Year Old, Sherry Cask, Gordon & MacPhail, 46%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

86 / 100

The sherry aromas, malty undertones and fresh citrus suggest a thoughtful balance between fruit and grain, while the palate moves toward baked apple, raisin and charred oak. The 46% ABV is a useful point of context for this 15-year-old single malt, without making strength a substitute for character. Warm spice, dried fruit and toffee carry through the medium-to-long finish; the worn-leather note adds a slightly more savoury edge. A composed, appealing direction, though the oak and spice may lead the fruit.
