Springbank Chieftain's Single Cask 37 Year Old, Sherry Cask, Cask #1343, 1970, Ian MacLeod, 43%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

85 / 100

There’s an interesting push and pull here: a broad spread of tropical fruit and sweet notes meets very present oak, varnish and tobacco. The palate sounds less easygoing, with bitterness, a little sourness and mineral spice alongside honey and vanilla. That contrast gives the whisky character, though the floral soap and varnish may not appeal to everyone. The long finish, moving from sweetness toward dryness, sounds like a fittingly firm close rather than a simple sweet linger.
