Strathisla Greatly Aged Whisky 52 Year Old, 1954, Gordon & MacPhail, 40%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

89 / 100

The toffee is the sweet centre of the palate, but roasted almonds and hints of dark chocolate give it some balance. Spiced pears add fruit without making sweetness the only point of interest. The nose has a similar range: ripe orchard apples and dried apricots sit alongside blackcurrant, with nutmeg and subtle cedar bringing a different note. On the medium-long finish, caramelized figs keep the sweet thread going, while gentle smokiness provides a welcome contrast. For someone who likes sweet flavours but wants more around them, that combination has clear appeal. The fig note means the finish still sounds sweet rather than dry, though, so the smokiness should be seen as a gentle counterpoint, not a change in direction.
