Orchard fruit meets wood spice.
The described character has a pleasing link between orchard fruit and gentle spice: stewed apples and poached pears lead into cinnamon baked apples, while waxy wood and roast nuts add a drier edge. That balance makes this an appealing, layered direction for a Speyside single malt, rather than a one-note fruit-led profile. The 31-year age statement and ex-bourbon American oak cask are notable context, but the listed SGD 654.60 price reference is substantial; the flavour description is compelling, though price alone cannot settle the value question.
The orchard fruit gives this whisky a clear centre: stewed apples and caramelised poached pears on the nose lead into cinnamon baked apples on the palate. That progression suits my preference for apple notes. Delicate wood spice and waxy wood polish bring a different character alongside the fruit, while raisins appear on both the nose and palate. The drying, waxy finish offers a contrast to the richer opening. What appeals most here is the balance between fruit and spice, rather than the age statement on its own. The waxy quality may not be everyone's preference, but it gives this otherwise fruit-led character a distinct close.
