Description

This Balvenie 26 Year Old 'A Day of Dark Barley' is the third release in The Balvenie Stories series, distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2019. It is a single cask expression (Cask no. 6855) aged for 26 years. The whisky's unique character stems from an experiment in 1992 when the distillery received a batch of dark roasted malted barley, typically used in stout production. This resulted in a pleasing depth with smokiness, oakiness, and classic honey, vanilla, and citrus flavors. It is a limited-edition release, fully matured in first-fill bourbon barrels and is non-chill filtered.

Nose
Big malty notes, soft brown sugar, vanilla toffee, blossom honey, and a mild oaky spiciness. A captivating bouquet of dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee beans, and a hint of toasty oak. Rich honey, ginger candy, dried mango, and a sharp, gummy sweetness. Earthy and dark with espresso beans, lemon-lime candy, dusty leather, charred brown bread, cocoa nibs, honeydew, orange blossom, grapefruit zest, cloves, candied ginger, and polished antique furniture.
Palate
Syrupy with a toffee sweetness, tangy orange peel, oak vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger spices. A harmonious fusion of rich caramel, nutty barley, and subtle dried fruits. Intense sweetness with dried mango, rich honey, and intense oak spice, turning to dark chocolate, croissant buttery, and a medley of dried fruits. Creamy tropical fruits quickly veering into a moderate bitter and sour spice, fading to spicy mocha and charred brown bread, followed by sour lemon, orange zest, grapefruit, cloves, ginger, and a mild black pepper spice.
Finish
Enduring gentle waves of vanilla and oak spices. A long, velvety finish with traces of roasted malt and a delightful sweetness. Zest and spice carry through, with sweetness fading to a buttery cinnamon note. Medium length with charred brown bread, cocoa nibs, ginger, lemon-lime candy, and a mild black pepper spice.
