Edradour 16 Years Old Barolo Cask Finish 2000 is a small batch bottling of Edradour single malt, drawn from just three casks. The whisky initially matured in bourbon hogsheads for over 12 years. It was then finished in Barolo hogsheads for 42 months, and bottled on 9 February 2017 at a cask strength of 56.7%. This reads as a fairly rounded, fruit-led whisky rather than a very heavy one. Sweet orange and red berries on the nose give way to smoked orange, soft red fruits and iced caramel on the palate, so there’s a gentle contrast between sweetness and smoke. The slightly dry, fruity finish sounds like a good counterpoint to that richer caramel note. The character feels invitingly layered without losing its lightness.
