Description

A whisky distillery in Goa, India, founded in 1996 by Paul P. John and part of the John Distilleries group. It laid down its first casks of single malt whisky in 2007 and launched its eponymous whisky brand in 2012. This exotic unpeated expression from the sunny shores of Goa, encapsulates a tender innocence enhanced with hints of honeyed fruitiness and a soft tinge of spice. Matured for 7 years in American white oak casks, it is a limited edition single malt.

Nose: A light citrus with manuka honey, ripe peach, apricot and vanilla. Peaches in syrup, almond liqueur and fresh papaya. Oak, sandalwood, malt, grilled fruit, dark fruit, spice and mango.
Palate: Superb mouthfeel of rich creaminess. Soft, sweet, delectable butterscotch. Dried apple chips, waves of honey, freshly-cooked waffles. Oak, dried tropical and orchard fruit, malt, baking spice, nuts and chili powder.
Finish: Warm spices and a slight saltiness. Lightly spiced, notes of maple syrup and apricot. Med-long finish with oak, dried fruit and cayenne. Dry finish with warm spices.

I tend to gravitate toward grain whisky, but the malt and oak here give me plenty to think about. Vanilla and peach lead into a creamy, butterscotch-rich palate; the dry, spiced finish keeps that sweetness in check. It sounds like a whisky I'd appreciate for its balance as much as its richness.
