A smashing Swedish single malt from Smögen, independently bottled by Decadent Drinks. This peated whisky was distilled in 2016 and spent the next eight years maturing, beginning in a pair of oloroso sherry casks and finishing in a second-fill sherry hogshead before it was bottled at a big, bold 57.1% ABV. A generously sherried, heavily peated treat right here. A release of 172 bottles.

shortwave_atlas9 AugThis is a bold meeting of sherry richness and smoke, with plums and pralines on the nose giving way to bonfire smoke, salted caramel and pepper on the palate. The character sounds powerful rather than restrained, so it may be a more imposing style than I usually gravitate toward. Still, the contrast is compelling, and the long finish brings the smoke and sweet peat back into focus without losing the peppery edge.
This 8-year-old Smogen is a sensory delight, balancing its peated character with a deep sherry influence. The texture is remarkably oily, allowing the notes of dark chocolate and plum to unfold gracefully alongside the more rustic elements of smoke and charcoal.
Sherry-led notes of plum and praline meet a steady thread of smoke, charcoal and pepper. That clear smoke presence suits my preferences, though the powerful character may be a lot for someone seeking a gentler dram.
