Description

Wild Turkey 101 is a bourbon whisky to write home about! Bottled at 101 proof (hence the name), or 50.5% ABV, this fine bourbon was actually drawn at 109 proof after 6 years of aging, before being diluted to a more palatable 101 proof. On the nose there is lots of sweet toffee, oak and vanilla ice cream. The palate is richer and full bodied with notes of pepper, caramel and cigars as well as hints ...

The cinnamon alongside vanilla and sweet toffee on the nose makes an inviting start for someone who likes spice with sweetness. On the palate, rye spice and pepper meet brown sugar and caramel, while sharp oak brings a firmer edge. That contrast interests me more than the sweetness alone: the spice has room to stand out without the sweeter notes disappearing. The finish continues the exchange, carrying cinnamon and pepper into dry oak, with caramel sauce as a softer counterpoint. Char and ash give the closing notes a drier direction than the opening suggests. I like the range here, though the sharp oak may be less appealing to someone looking for a gentler balance.

The chocolatey malt gives this bourbon an interesting grain note, while sweet corn and toffee keep the palate rounded against the rye spice. I like that contrast: the malt character is there, but it shares space with pepper and oak rather than taking over. The finish continues with dry oak, cinnamon and orange peel, giving the sweeter notes a firmer edge. A lively, grain-led set of flavours.
