Description

Glenfiddich Age of Discovery 19 Year Old Madeira Cask Finish is a rich 19-year-old single malt Scotch whisky, part of the 'Age of Discovery' series. It was inspired by the pioneering spirit of Portuguese explorers in the 15th century and finished in fine, aged Madeira wine casks from an independent island winery dating back to 1850. This process created an earthy, bright whisky with incredible rich depth and a warmth that fades to long sweetness.

Nose
Deep earthy aromas of sweet ripe fig and orange marmalade, with bright notes of fresh gooseberry and grapes. Hints of moss, fresh juicy pears, tangy orange, sweet Madeira wine, fruitcake, pineapple, chocolate, and vanilla.
Palate
Rich, spicy cinnamon and crushed black pepper on a deep earthy base. Caramelised fruits, crystallised ginger, raisins, and hints of dry oak. It has a satisfying, silky smooth, almost oily texture, with notes of dark fruit, vanilla, shortbread, rosewater, and candied ginger.
Finish
Dry with warmth that fades into sweet marmalade notes. It has a medium length, with a slightly drying spicy oak, cinnamon, nutty, and a hint of chocolate and bitter marmalade, with lingering spiciness.

The appeal here is the push and pull between cinnamon and crushed black pepper on one side, and caramelised fruit and sweet marmalade on the other. That gives the Madeira-finished malt a clearly spicy core without losing its fruit-led character. The dry, gently warming finish sounds like a thoughtful counterweight to the sweeter notes, rather than an abrupt change of direction. A measured, flavourful fit for someone who enjoys spice when it has sweetness to play against.

Rich fruit, balanced spice.

Sweet ripe fig and orange marmalade give the nose a generous start, while fresh gooseberry and pear bring a brighter side to the fruit. On the palate, cinnamon and crushed black pepper sit over an earthy base; raisins, vanilla and a hint of dry oak make for a combination I tend to like. The silky, almost oily texture sounds appealing, though the caramelised fruit and spice may feel quite rich for someone after a quieter style. The finish is where the sweetness gets a useful counterweight: dry, slightly drying spicy oak and lingering spiciness, with marmalade taking on a bitter edge. I like that contrast more than the sweetness alone. It gives the richer notes some shape without making the oak the whole story.

The earthy base gives the ripe fruit and marmalade a little depth, while cinnamon and ginger bring a clear spicy turn. The dry, slightly bitter marmalade finish sounds like a useful counterpoint.
